Many people often wonder are saltwater tanks hard to keep or are they not much harder then a freshwater tank. Truth be told though a saltwater aquarium is not much harder then a freshwater tank as long as you avoid a few of the common beginner saltwater aquarium setup mistakes that can ultimately doom your system.

What To Avoid When Setting Up a Saltwater Tank

Lack Of Patience- While it sounds like a rather simple tip just having patience can go a long way to guaranteeing your success with saltwater aquariums. Many new marine fish keepers rush to put fish into their tanks before the tank has fully cycled. This will usually cause an ammonia spike that kills most saltwater fish. Wait until your tank has cycles then wait one to two weeks between new fish additions to let the tank biologically adjust.

Keep To Small Of a Tank- A very common mistake people make when setting up a new saltwater tank is to start with a smaller tank for budget reasons. While this may work in freshwater it will normally not work with beginner marine tanks. The reason is that many marine fish need stability in their environment and a smaller tank can change very quickly and stress out the fish which leads to disease and dead fish. A tank of at least 30 gallons is good for your first marine tank, but buy the biggest you can afford and fit in your home.

Not Doing Any Research- You should take the time to research the types of saltwater fish you have an interest in keeping in your tank. You will probably find that some of them are either to difficult to keep or may get to large for your tank. Eliminate those fish and stick with the proven hardy beginner fish that will be more forgiving to any beginner mistakes. Once you have an idea of the fish you would like to keep you can then buy the proper sized tank for them and the right sized filters and other support equipment.
