Is fishing the right way for you to spend your vacation? It is for many people, on any weekend they can get free. Just ask yourself if being in the outdoors, by the water, and having time with family and friends is important to you. If your answer is yes, then fishing is something you will enjoy. Where you would like to fish does not make any difference. You may love to stand in the rushing waters of a river or sail on the ocean. With your hook, some fishing line and a casting rod in hand, you will soon be able to catch your own delicious meal.

In the text below, are a few more reasons why fishing may be one of the best things for you to do.

The Right Casting Rod

There are many types of casting rods selling in the stores lately. But keep in mind, when you begin to look for one, it is not required to have the latest trend or the most costly. There are many other aspects to think about. The more you can figure out about reels, length of casting rods, and how the casting rods are made, the closer you can become to choosing the right rod for you.

All Kinds Of Fish

Our lakes, rivers, and oceans have hundreds of different kinds of fish. Various kinds of fish live in freshwater, without ever tasting saltwater. Moreover, other fish can survive in both types of water. For example, Salmon, exist in saltwater, yet lay their young in freshwater, in the same area each year. All kinds of fish migrate over huge distances to the same area, every year.

Another part of fishing is why it is done around the patterns of fish migrations and their breeding seasons. You can have a wonderful fishing experience by discovering more about what kind of fish are in the body of water that is close to you, along with knowing when the fishing season begins.

Why Folks Go Fishing

Being in the fresh outdoors, brings an opportunity for many people to be in a quiet place, join in a friendly competition, or to try another way to fish. Most methods of fishing, are easy to learn, and could make your fishing a lot more fun. Other people love to fish so that they can spend time alone, or to be with family or friends.

It is a good idea go fishing with your children or a young relative. The experience may be one that they will cherish the rest of their life. Just as a person learns to ride a bicycle, fishing also brings independence, since it is an important survival skill.

Fishing Guides

You can find a lot more fun ways to fish by reading an Internet eBook on fishing. It should cover everything you ever wanted to know about fishing, and help you find the style of fishing you like the most.

Tom Straub is an accomplished author and publisher of the Best Fishing Times web site, where you can read more on Sport Fishing and a dozen other fishing topics.

Trout fishing

If trout is your prey and you enjoy beautiful mountain scenery, you will love the Aberdares Mountains. Since there are few tourists in the area, it is peaceful and quiet. Although the fish are not large, they are plentiful, despite the bait fishing of temporary residents.

A map of the area is a good investment regardless of how far you wish to go off the beaten track, but an easy trip for beginners is the Fisherman?s amp in the Aberdares National Park. Check with The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) about road conditions and book one of the bandas at the camp through them. KWS can also help you to obtain a fishing license. You should always fish with a companion in the Aberdares as wild animals (including lion) and slippery paths and rocks can be dangerous. It is also a good idea to take two reliable four-wheel drive vehicles on the trip.

The Chania River is very near the camp and holds significant numbers of trout. Above the bridge is a very narrow stretch of water, but you can pull out many trout in a very short period of time. (You won?t have much space to cast, but if you practice on the wide stretch below the bridge, you?ll be ready.)

Below the bridge are some lovely pools full of trout, and if you continue to hike along the river, you will find some very large pools with larger fish. Roll casting is best here due to overhanging branches. Depending on whether fishing conditions are dry or wet, the best flies to use are the Adams Irresistible, Kenya Bug, Mrs. Simpson, and Royal Coachman. Kenya Trout and Salmon Flies Limited of Nairobi is good place to buy your flies. With three or four days advance ordering, they can tie a few dozen for you for an extremely reasonable price.

Another good place for the beginner is the Aberdares Country Club. The club stocks the stretch of the river running along the boundary of the clubs property, and the friendly staff at the reception will gladly direct you to the best fishing spots. If you walk for about two Kilometers up stream, you will find a very large pool that looks like a fishermen?s dream. It is. If you fish this pool, you will very likely have your own fish for breakfast.

Trout fishing in Kenya is as good as anywhere else in the world. Although the trout in the lower regions of Aberdares are smaller in size. They more than compensate in their small size with mass. There are far too many trout in the stocked streams in the lower fringes of the Aberdares. These are suitable for those that don?t want to go through the rigours of climbing higher up and accessing thick bushes to get to the rivers from the main roads.

Kenya trout fishing without appreciating the surroundings is ike having unsalted fish altogether. The Aberdares moorlands are equivalent to the moss filled dew trapping cool undergrowth highlands of the UK. The vegetation and landscape is just breathtaking. So while you are there fishing make sure you take some photos of you, the fish, you and the fish and of course the landscape.

Caution here, the lions of Aberdares have been said to be fond of stalking lone fishermen in their reverie of drawing fish from the rivers. It?s therefore always advisable to go through the established fishing clubs which will have information on safety and the location of wildlife. Doing a solo thing in Aberdares might be rewarding in having the fish to yourself but could also be costly.

Robert is a travel to Kenya expert with landmark safaris. They organize your fly fishing in Africa Kenya at the Aberdares Park. http://www.landmarksafaris.com

If you're anything like me, waders are an integral part of your fishing repertoire. My favorite type of fishing is wade fishing in rivers and streams, and for that reason, fishing waders are integral to my fishing success. There are three main types of fishing waders available for anglers and they all seem to have their good and bad points. Choosing the proper kind for the type of wading you do is important. Mainly because being uncomfortable in your fishing waders means that you'll spend less time in the water, and that's no good for anyone. Below you will find the three most popular types of waders and what they have to offer.

Rubber Fishing Waders - Rubber fishing waders are the least expensive and least comfortable type of waders. If you don't fish very often and/or don't move from place to place much while fishing, rubber waders may be the best waders for you. It's also not a bad idea to keep a pair of rubber waders laying around for emergency situations.

Neoprene Fishing Waders - As far as cost is concerned neoprene fishing waders are right in the middle of the scale. You should be able to purchase a good pair for under $100. Neoprene waders are quite comfortable as well. The only downfall to neoprene waders is that they can be quite hot, when it's hot outside. They are wonderful in the winter however. If you're going to purchase your first decent pair of waders, I would go with neoprene. Neoprene fishing waders will give you a good feel as to how good waders work and perform. Neoprene fishing waders are quite durable as well, and will last you a long time.

Breathable Fishing Waders - On the cost scale breathable fishing waders are at the top. However, they are also at the top of the comfort scale. I personally use breathable fishing waders and wouldn't use any other type. A good pair of breathable fishing waders is like wearing a pair of Dockers. The comfort level is unmatched. Breathable waders aren't quite as durable as neoprene waders, but as long as you take care of them, they last a long time. I've had my current pair of breathable fishing waders for a little over 7 years, and they're still going strong.

Fishing waders come either with boots attached or with what's called a stocking foot. A stocking foot is simply a neoprene “bootie” that attached to the waders. Then wading boots are slipping into them just like normal shoes. Stocking foot and wading boots are ,by far, the most comfortable way to go. They are what I use, and I'll cover three or four miles in a fishing trip without ever sacrificing comfort at all. Again, if you don't cover a lot of distance while fishing, boot foot waders will work just fine. At the end of the day the type of fishing waders that you need have to do with the type of fishing you do and the amount of distance you normally cover while fishing.

Fishing reels are sometimes taken for granted and not many people take time to think about the Intricacies of fishing reel parts. They are the device that brings the fish in, and modern fishing reels are fairly complicated devices. The spinning reel is the most popular version used in fishing today, but it is not always the best choice for many types of fishing. You should never guess as to which reel will be the right choice for you while browsing the aisles are a fishing supply store. Understanding how a fishing reel works can help you determine which are the best options for your needs. Spinning reels and baitcast reels are different, and in either case, it is a good idea to chose the reel with the fewest parts and they have the lower chance of mechanical failure.

Reel bodies can be made of plastic, aluminum, steel, or graphic. Aluminum is tougher than graphite, but graphite is much lighter. It is a personal call whether the lower weight of graphite is worth it trade off in toughness, but it primarily depends on the type of fishing you do. Larger fish will require aluminum, while catching smaller fish allows you to get away with graphite and have less weight to deal with. Graphite is also great at resisting saltwater corrosion. When looking at a reel to buy you should be sure it feels solid and has no loose and rattling parts. There movement should be smooth and there should be no back play.

The reel size is important as well. Lighter lines call for smaller reels, and vise versa. In most cases ten pound test line is as tough as you need, so your reel should not exceed the diameter needed by ten pound test line. However, if you are into serious saltwater fishing you may need a bigger reel and line.

One of the most important fishing reel parts are the gears as these are what connect the crank to the spool. The ratio of the gears determines how many revolutions the spool makes when one revolution of the crank is made. And example would be a ratio or 4:1. This means that turning the crank once makes the spool turn four times. Having a lower ratio, such as 3:1 is advantageous for reeling in bigger fish as it provides more torque. The downside is that the process will be slower. For smaller fish a higher ratio can be used since less torque is needed. The upside is that you can reel the fish in faster.

Drag systems are what apply the pull on a hooked fish, but let the line out when the fish is fighting. This helps absorb the energy of the fish and prevent a broken line or dropped reel. The ball bearings in the reel help keep the action smooth, which aids in a very confident and consistent reeling motion.

Your fishing reel parts when assembled together are the mechanical components that helps you actually bring the fish in. If the reel is not up to the task, you will not catch the fish even though it took the bait. Do not skimp on your reel, but also do not buy a reel that in excessive to your needs as an oversized reel will make catching smaller fish more difficult.

When it comes to fishing lures, you want to be sure you have the right one for the job but with so many to choose from how do you pick the best one? The waters you are fishing, the time of year and the weather all have an impact on what type of lure will look tasty to the species of fish you were trying to catch.

There are a variety of different lures, all in different shapes sizes and colors and most avid anglers have quite a selection in their tackle box. Here are a few types you might want to include in your list of fishing gear.

Surface Lures

These are lures that you retrieve along the surface of the water and are fun to use since the fish explodes up out of the water in order to take in the lure. They are great if you're fishing in waters that have a lot of weeds since they remain on the top and are less likely to get tangled in the weeds. Surface lures come in all kinds of colors and shapes and it's fun to pick them out in the store and find the ones that work best for you.

Spoons

Spoons are a simple metal lure that looks like a spoon. When you retrieve them they make a wobbling motion which is attractive to fish. They are inexpensive and fairly easy to use so a great choice for beginners.

Spinners

This type of fishing lore has a blade that rotates and the rotating motion gives off a reflection which imitates the light glinting off of fish scales in the water. When you are retrieving a spinner, you can alter the speed that you retrieve thus making it look like an injured fish. If you're fishing for pike a large spinner can be great but if you go in for mullet or trout try a smaller size.

Jerk Baits

Jerk baits don't have any movement on their own but allow the angler to jerk them and bring them to life like a wounded fish or worm. You cast them into the water and then make a jerky motion with your rod which simulates the movements of an injured fish making it look like a tasty morsel to the fish you are trying to attract.

Soft Baits

These are soft rubber baits that could look like long worms or frogs or a bunch of other shapes. Typically these are used with a weighted jig head and retreat slowly or in a jerky motion.

Floating Divers

This type of fishing lure sinks into the water after you cast and can cover depths up to 15 feet or more. Each floor is designed for a different depth and this depends on the angle of the lure. A lure with a smaller angle will dive deeper than a lore with a bigger angle. Depending on the depth of the water that your target fish hangs out in will dictate the type of lure you use.

Light Standard Casting Lures

Standard casting lures can be used to catch a large range of fish including certain types of bass if retrieve data slow to medium speed. They range from about 1/16 of announced to 3 ounces and are typically used for freshwater fishing of lightweight species.

Heavy Standard Casting Lures

This heavy fishing lure is best used for the heaviest fish like bass and walleye. Just like any other lure they come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.

Long Casting - Jigging Lures

These jigging lures are used for long casting and are used to catch anything from tuna to trout to pike.

Deadly Diamond Lures

This is a small fishing lure that is under 1 ounce and is used to catch the smaller fish. It's cut with a diamond shape on the top and the light reflects from this therefore attracting fish. These lures are typically used for walleye and crappy although can work good for other small species to.

Most anglers are interested in two things. Getting out into nature and/or catching more fish. There is no disputing these two reasons to fish. No matter what type of fishing you engage in, the reason that you fish boils down to one or both of those things. In this article I'm going to give you a few tips that will help you catch more fish. There's nothing I can do about the “being in nature” aspect of fishing, I think God has that handled all we have to do is partake. If you would like to catch more fish, simply begin using one all of the tips and/or techniques the next time you go fishing.

Pay Attention To Your Hands - Many anglers pay no attention to what they've been handling before they bait up. It's always a good idea to make sure any foreign smells are off of your hands before baiting up. Many species of fish have very sensitive senses of smell and can smell foreign substances on your bait. If the do, the fish are much less apt to bite. The thing I do before beginning my fishing expedition is to grab a handful of dirt or grass and rub it in my hands for 30-45 seconds. Then I wash my hands in the water. This eliminates any foreign smells on my hands. If you think I'm nuts, what's the worst that can happen by following this tip?

Live Bait Needs Top Look Natural - If you use live bait (such as worms) it needs to look natural. What do I mean by natural? I mean that it needs to look like a worm looks, the way God intended, and not like a “worm ball”. A “worm ball” is what's created when a live worm is threaded onto a single large hook or hooked over and over again onto a single hook. A set of gang hooks is simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem, thus enabling you to present a worm in a completely natural manner. You don't think a “worm ball” looks the least bit natural do you?

What Size Line Do You Use - In my experience, many anglers use fishing line that's much too heavy. Match your fishing line to what you're fishing for. The smaller your line is, the less visible it will be to the fish. The less visible it is to the fish, the more bites you will receive, it's as simple as that. Remember, whatever pound test you happen to be using can stand up to that amount of dead weight at it's weakest point without breaking. This means if you're using 10-pound test, you should be catching 5 to 10 pound fish. If they fish you're fishing for are smaller than that, use a lighter line.

Clean Your Reel Once A Year - Cleaning and greasing your fishing reel is fairly easy and should be done once a year to keep your reel working properly. You need to have confidence in the fact that your fishing reel will perform, and the best way to ensure this is by cleaning and greasing it once a year. The last thing you need is for you drag to stop working while your fighting a large fish. Believe me, this is no fun at all, and is avoided by taking an hour of time, once a year, and cleaning and greasing your fishing reel.

The bottom line is that if you employ one or all of these tips, you will catch more fish, today. They are all simple and easy, and no one should have a problem doing any of them. Remember what Steven Wright said of us anglers, “There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore, looking like an idiot”. How true that is, and hopefully by following any or all of these steps, you can avoid the latter part of that quote.

August 31, 2006 - On this Wednesday morning, Tropical Depression Ernesto left the Florida mainland, and like a pent up post pubescent teenager, quickly regained its stamina over the warm Atlantic waters. Ernesto was officially declared Tropical Storm Ernesto around 11 o?clock that night.

About the same time, the beaches east of Jacksonville experienced the first band of Ernesto, rapidly moving cumulus clouds accompanied by thunderous booms and bright flashes, winds around 25 mph and brief but torrential downpours. The bands continued racing onshore intermittently throughout the night and by morning it was over. Or was it?

The eye of Tropical Storm Ernesto had actually passed well offshore of North Florida, continuously gathering strength and churning up the waters as it made its way to landfall in the Carolinas.

Weather wise, the storm was no big deal in the North Florida beaches area, and most people slept through it with little incident. But there were those who retired that evening with tense anticipation of what was to come the next day. As Ernesto passed offshore and north east winds turned to south west winds, a phenomenon typical of cyclonic storms occurred in the area.

As the waves generated by a passing storm pound the shore with the fierce power of a nor'easter, they can at times be huge, but are generally sloppy, poorly formed mush. These waves, backed by the winds from the east, can last as long as the storm is out there churning up the waters.

If the storm is paralleling the coast, and is close enough that it is effecting our wind direction, once it passes and is to the north, the winds will shift, coming out of the west.

Those big fat waves that were once pounding our beach are now standing up proud, spitting back foam from their tips with the blusterous wind hollowing out their faces - preventing the waves from breaking until they can no longer hold back, finally curling down in a thunderous crash of white, foamy water peeling off left and right.

The chop is gone, and the surrounding water is as smooth as a baby's butt. The water can look as calm as a lake, only to be heaved up by sets of incoming swells standing at attention until finally bursting at the seams at the last possible moment.

East Coast Surf is entirely dependent on storms that brew offshore in the Atlantic, producing swells that eventually travel to the coastline. From a surfer?s point of view, the conditions accompanying a storm like Ernesto is as good as it gets in North East Florida. But you better be there on time, because it only lasts a few tide cycles.

And that?s the downside. This west wind is so good at cleaning up the surf, that over time it totally knocks the waves down, and they keep getting smaller as long as the west wind lasts. In an absence of anything creating waves in the Atlantic, the surf can diminish to less than 6 inches. Not an uncommon occurrence in Jax Beach or the entire east coast for that matter.

Due to the geography of the coastline in north Florida, we seldom get a direct hit from hurricanes or tropical storms. This is not to say that we won?t, and if we do, it will no doubt be disastrous. We do however get a lot of storms passing by, and some very close calls. Floyd is one that comes into mind that skirted our coast on its way to wreak devastation further north. The surfing community here has come to know what to look for, and with an excellent bottom that is in place at the Jacksonville Beach Pier, they also know where to go.

Tropical Storm Ernesto was small by any comparison and did not spend a lot of time off our shore generating waves. But every surfer knows that when the right circumstances converge, and all the conditions are met, there is a real potential for some very fun, if not huge surfing opportunities. In this case, this little tropical storm called Ernesto delivered!
