One of the most popular fish for anglers to try for in the Florida flats is the tarpon. This very large game fish will often reel in at 40 to 50 pounds, but record winning catches have been well over 200 pounds. Redfish is a popular flats fishing species from August to November, with catches peaking in September. Redfish readily accept a wide variety of baits, and are found throughout the Florida flats. Redfish were once in danger from commercial over fishing however, it is now thriving as a game fish. Redfish frequently exceed 40 pounds, and are a favorite Florida fish among anglers.

Several smaller fish are also popular among anglers fishing the Florida flats and backcountry. Sea trout are another popular game fish in the Florida flats. While these fish do not grow to the size of the redfish or tarpon, they are good-sized fish, and are a favorite among cooks. Mangrove snapper are typically 8-10 pounds, and are found, not surprisingly, in the mangroves of the Florida backcountry.
