When you start a hobby in tropical fish keeping and you know nothing about it, you really need to get some information on the subject. It’s so interesting and of course it’ll help you avoid those costly and needless mistakes. Here’s a few tips to get you started, but don’t forget to do your own research also.
It’s a good idea to test that this hobby is for you before spending out lots of cash so to do that get yourself a twenty gallon tank to start. This size tank is more stable than smaller ones in terms of water temperature and it’s chemistry. And on that subject, don’t use too many chemicals. Understand them first.
It may sound strange but it’s best to wash your bits and pieces for the tank in actual tank water and not in tap water as this will kill off any friendly bacteria. Carry out regular water changes each month.
Check the compatibility of your fish before buying them as some species will attack or eat other species and do check the fish for defects before purchase. For example some may have split fins, damaged gills or marks on their bodies. Don’t overfeed your fish. Twice a day is sufficient.
When you’re introducing new fish to the tank it’s a good idea to put the bag into the tank first so that it’s water can regulate with that of the tank water temperature itself. Stock your tank with fish slowly so that the bacteria can have time to increase in order to deal with the extra fish waste.
Starting a tropical freshwater fish aquarium is relatively easy if you keep to these principles. Don’t try to rush it and whatever you do, research the hobby before doing anything. This will ensure you have a tropical fish keeping hobby for life and not for a month.
