Often times when setting up a new saltwater aquarium people wonder what is the best method of filtration for saltwater tank. That is a tough question to answer because every tank is different but the article below will give you an over view of saltwater aquarium filtration and help you better understand this critical piece of equipment.

Common Methods Of Filtration For Saltwater Aquariums

Hang On Tank Filters- These filters are small compact units that are best suited to tanks that are under 35 gallons. They are easy to set up and do a good job for lightly stocked tanks. Many people also use them as supplemental filters on larger tanks for specialized filtration media like activated carbon or nitrate removers.

Canister Filters- Canister filters are pretty much the most common type of filter you will see on both freshwater and salt water aquariums. They are pressurized units that provide good filtration and flow They are available in a wide variety of sizes to handle saltwater tanks up over 150 gallons and small tanks down to 20 gallons. On larger tanks many people run multiple units as opposed to just one.

Sumps And Wet Dry Filters- Wet dry filters are the high end of the spectrum and are also the most complicated and expensive to set up and install. They look like another aquarium under your tank and the water is gravity fed down to them and returned with a high volume water pump. The great thing about these types of filters is that they can hold filter media, heaters, protein skimmers and all kinds of other equipment that would other wise be inside your tank cluttering the view. These filters again can handle very small tanks and tanks well over 1000 gallons.
